Dinosaur Monument is Safe from Colorado’s Drilling Plan
For any environmentalist or conservationist, hearing the word “drilling” is never a good thing. So, when the federal government talked about a plan for drilling in the energy-rich soil of northwestern Colorado, we automatically started thinking about how this would impact the surrounding environment and wildlife. Fortunately, the new plan released last Friday included new measures for protecting the public land and the famous Dinosaur National Monument.

The new drilling proposal has added more comprehensive protection for Dinosaur National Monument and the surrounding land. Drilling will also be limited to certain times of year to minimize environmental disruptions, and protect the wildlife during nesting times and anytime where the local wildlife is more vulnerable. Drilling restrictions will also protect the sage grouse, keep the night sky dark and limit noise and visual intrusions due to heavy, ugly drilling equipment.
Why are we drilling in the first place?
Besides protection efforts, the drilling will yield enough natural gas to heat 7.5 million homes for 15 years. The new restrictions make drilling a little more difficult, but the cost of not having such protection in place would be devastating to the surrounding environment and wildlife and last way beyond what the drilling efforts would yield in the process. A final decision on the drilling plan is expected later this year. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime…
