Over the River Project and Wildlife Consequences
We’ve talked a lot about how important it is to protect and preserve every part of this great land. With Christo’s Over the River project moving forward, you may have some questions about how this type of art installation will affect the surrounding wildlife.
Over the River is committed to conservation
Like the Dvorak Expedition family, the artists behind Over the River, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, believe that the surrounding environment with all its wildlife, plant life and river life, is one of the Arkansas River Valley’s greatest treasures. Because of their dedication to conservation, great efforts have been taken to make sure that potential impacts of this project are minimized, if not eliminated altogether. We all want to make sure that noise, vegetation, air and water quality during the construction, installation and removal of the art project has as little an impact on the environment as possible.
Book “Over the River” Unique Adventure for Summer 2017
The unwavering dedication to preservation is also one of the reasons that this project won’t be realized until sometime in 2017. In fact, the artistic design of Over the River has been changed over time in order to be more sensitive to breeding and nesting seasons for the local wildlife. Construction buffer zones have also been put in place protecting potentially active eagle nests as well as designated sheep areas.
Over the River to fund new wildlife corridor
Besides protecting what is already there, Christo has pledged to fund a new wildlife corridor that will improve the lives of the bighorn sheep that inhabit the area around the Arkansas River. This is something that the Colorado Division of Wildlife has been trying to build for a long time, and thanks to Christo, the wildlife of the Arkansas River will benefit from Over the River long after it has been removed.
